We love to share a good news story here at Applyforagrant, especially if it helps the often-beleaguered motorists of Britain. In a great incentive to get more people to go green when they buy a new car, it has been announced that the Plug-In Car Grant will be retained along with a new Plug-In Van Grant, which will cut the cost of eligible vans by 20% up to the value of £8,000.
For vans to be eligible, they must emit less than 75g/km CO2, be capable of travelling at least 60 miles between charges for fully electric vans and 10 miles in electric mode for hybrid vans, more than 50mph and to ensure safety, be approved by ‘European Vehicle Type Approval’.
At present, the Plug-In Car grant means that buyers of ultra-low emissions cars can receive a grant of 25 per cent towards the cost of the vehicle, up to a maximum of £5,000. The cars that are currently eligible for the grant include the Citroen C Zero, Mitsubishi i-MiEV, Nissan Leaf, Peugeot iOn and Smart fortwo electric drive, all of which are on sale now. Eligible cars that are expected to come on sale this year include the Chevrolet Volt, Renault Fluence ZE and the Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid. The Tata Vista, an electric car with a range of up to 160 miles, is also eligible but the UK on-sale date is still to be confirmed.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) gives this news two very enthusiastic thumbs up with Paul Everitt, SMMT’s CEO saying that keeping the grant in place sends “a strong signal to the global automotive industry about the UK’s determination to be a leading market for ultra-low carbon vehicles.”
It’s great news for car buyers and van buyers, especially businesses, who want to go green, as well as a great way to encourage more and more eco-friendly vehicles to go on the market in the UK.
